Frequently Asked Questions
How can you define the skin and its structure?
The skin is the body’s largest organ: it protects against germs, regulates body temperature, and enables touch sensations.
The skin’s main layers include the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis and is prone to many issues, including acne, wrinkles, and rashes.
What does the epidermis (top layer of skin) do?
The epidermis is the top layer of the skin that you can see and touch. A protein inside skin cells – Keratin - makes up the skin cells and, along with other proteins, sticks together to form this layer. The epidermis acts as a protective barrier, makes new skin, protects your body, and provides skin color.
What does the dermis (middle layer of skin) do?
The dermis makes up 90% of skin’s thickness. This middle layer of skin has collagen and elastin, grows hair, makes oil and sweat, supplies blood. Moreover, the nerve receptors tell you when it is too hot to touch, itchy or super soft and even help you to feel pain.
What does the hypodermis (bottom layer of skin) do?
The bottom layer of skin, or hypodermis, is the fatty layer. The hypodermis cushions muscles and bones, has connective tissue, helps the nerves and blood vessels, and regulates body temperature.
What are the most common skin conditions?
The most common skin conditions are acne (acne vulgaris), atopic dermatitis (eczema), hives (Urticaria), sunburn, dermatitis, rash, rosacea, rosacea, psoriasis, cellulitis, measles, and melasma.
Why does the skin age?
Skin aging is a fact of life! Intrinsic aging is the aging process that takes place over the years regardless of external influences. The collagen and elastin fibers become thicker, more clumped, and looser, resulting in inelastic and brittle skin and eventually in wrinkling and sagging. As time passes by, the skin’s exfoliation process decreases, causing dead skin cells to accumulate and stick together for longer periods of time. A second type of aging is extrinsic aging. Unlike the previous cause of skin aging, it can be controlled because it is a result of environmental damage.
